📌 SaaS Business Idea - A Painful Screen Time App

They say they want to spend less time on their phones but the doom-scrolling never ends. What if you built the app that actually made them stop... by charging them every time they don’t? Would they quit or would you cash in?

Problem & Solution 🔍️

Problem to solve

Any productivity enthusiast have tried at least once to reduce their screen time. They know how important that is but even after trying all the hacks (time screen, removing apps, grayscale, etc.) they often come back scrolling on social medias. All these methods don’t work simply because people don’t actually care about it. And what do people care about? Money.

Traditional tracking apps offer reminders or soft limits, which are easily overridden. As a result, many users remain locked in cycles of “doom scrolling” and app addiction, wasting time and harming productivity. They need something stronger to actually make these app work.

Solution to build

What we’re building here is a screen time app that actually takes user’s money when they don’t respect their goals. It would ask at first which are the user’s goals in terms of screen time specific to certain apps. The user would then deposit a chosen amount (minimum required for accountability) and using the built in screen time APIs the app would track total screen time & app-specific usage. The concept behind the money part is the following:

Good behavior → Get money back

  • Stay under screen time limits = refund part of the deposit.

  • Gradual refunds (e.g., €1 per day under the limit).

Bad behavior → Lose money

  • Exceed screen time = the app keeps a percentage of the deposit

  • and other bad behaviors like: opening the app as first thing, using socials in the early morning, etc.
